22nd May, 2008 Macau

Jump for Sichuan: Charity Bungy Marathon

The nation will never forget the disaster that struck our homeland on 12 May 2008. Measured at the magnitude of 8.0 on the Richter scale, the devastating Sichuan earthquake wiped out thousands of homes and has already claimed more than 40,000 lives while affecting nearly 500,000 people. Despite the plight in many stricken areas, victims have nonetheless displayed admirable resolve to live on and even give a hand to those in need, along with rescue teams who are working around the clock to save lives. This proves, after all, there might just be light at the end of the tunnel.

Disasters might be relentless, but so is love. The Macau SAR in particular is deeply concerned about the earthquake and has offered extensive assistance to victims in the affected regions. Sharing the region's care for Sichuan, Entpk.com, Cycle Sports Club and Macau Tower have joined hands to support the relief operations of Macau Red Cross by co-hosting the "Jump for Sichuan: Charity Bungy Marathon". The event will be held at Macau Tower on 25 May (Sunday) from 9 am to 2 pm to generate funds through donation.

The Bungy Marathon summons more than 30 sponsored benefactors, who will be taking plunges from 233 metres in a bid to channel their courage into fruitful donations. On the day, Representative from the Ministry of Culture and Education People's Republic of China, Macau's Olympic torch bearers Tam Oi Lam and Ng Chan Teng, as well as Macanese singers and celebrity Patrick Tse will be present to support the cause of charity.

Entpk.com and Cycle Sports Club first conceived this charity event a week ago, and have diligently accumulated pledges of close to MOP$500,000 to date. In order to enhance the event's appeal, Macau Tower will be sponsoring all bungy jumps for participating donors, as well as offering free drinks and refreshments to the public in an attempt to encourage more donations. Donation boxes will be set up throughout the Tower, and all proceeds, along with a MOP$200,000 donation from Macau Tower, will go to the Macau Red Cross to support their relief and reconstruction efforts in Sichuan.

With the "Jump for Sichuan: Charity Bungy Marathon" event, the Macau community is reaching out to the sorrow-stricken in Sichuan with our support and encouragement. We appeal to all media that this meaningful event be publicized through your communication channel, so that more donations can be raised at this Sunday's event.
