"... a buffet of almost indescribable lushness (the
cheese table alone has almost 20 offerings, some of
them astonishing)." ~ The New York Times
"There are no words to describe this restaurant.
It is such a different experience to eat here. Be
prepared to eat a lot, though. The so-called appetizers
offer you a sample of just about every piece of Portuguese
cuisine in the "petiscos" category... the plates are
also very good, but no one gets to try them, because
by the time you're done with the entrance table, you've
already eaten enough for 5 persons." ~ Dining-Network.com
The Story of Tromba Rija
Founded 50 years ago by Antonio and Rosario in Venda
de Aldeia, the story of Tromba Rija began with a local
tradition - the slaughtering of pigs every Tuesday
of the week. Back in the 1950's, pork is preserved
with the use of salts. Antonio would carefully store
salted pork into cabinets, except for the skulls which
are often too large to fit. They will then be sold
at cheap prices or given away. Rosaria then came up
with the idea of using them to prepare the most popular
Portuguese platter, the Feijoada, consisting of thinly
sliced cold cuts. The dish soon brought fame to the
restaurant, and food lovers would visit them every
Wednesday for this wonderful gourmet. Not only did
this become a regular gathering time, "Tromba Rija"
quickly became synonymous with a joyous feast. As
the tradition was built around pigs' heads, Tromba
Rija (Pig Snout) naturally became the name of this
famous restaurant. Today, Tromba Rija also represents
the warm hospitality of the nation where guests can
always expect to be greeted with the most extravagant
indulgence.
