The Loi Krathong Festival is an ancient festival and one
of the important festivals of Thailand. The releasing of
a krathong to the river is a gesture of respect to the river
goddess Mae Kong Ka. It is a part of thanksgiving for her
bounty in providing water for livelihood and agriculture,
as water is an important source for cultivation. Another
is a plea for forgiveness of having polluted her waters.
At night, people gather in thousands beside the canals and
rivers. With a silent prayer they carefully place their
krathongs with flowers, incense and one or more lit candles
inside in the water and release them to the current. Some
also put their hairs and nails as well as coins to signify
longevity, to fulfill wishes and to release their sins.
The young couples pray for their love.
